Lead a Shaolin Life

Shaolin and Ch'an

Calm the mind and strengthen the body. Achieve stillness through movement .... beyond words, thoughts and intellect.

Shaolin teaches us how to lead our lives: always at ease and ever-present. And how to lead our lives single-mindedly and unconfused through daily practice of training our body and quieting our mind.

- Master Shi Guo Song

Gung fu Classes:
Students learn the elements of Shaolin quan or boxing forms that involve the hands, eyes, body and feet. Classes begin with stretches and warm up exercises and students learn to coordinate upper and lower body, and heart and mind. Students enjoy the discipline, and exercises that both strengthen and improve flexibility.

Levels:
We do not use a "belt" system like many other schools use because
we believe that all students learn and progress at different rates
or have had prior training/experience. However, there is a loose
requirement that students must know the necessary forms before
learning the next level of forms which is outlined above. This is
to keep the class moving at a steady pace and to allow students to
be recieve the proper instruction and attention. For example, if
you are completely new to martial arts, you should participate in
all of the portions of the class and practice the forms in the
newcomers level (wubu quan or chuji chang quan). Once you have
become familiar with both of these (you can perform the entire
set without help) you can then practice the forms at the beginners
level. It is estimated that a student spend about 3 months learning
at the newcomer level and 3-6 months at the beginner level. This
time may vary depending on the the student's commitment level and
individual ability.

Testing:
We do not have formal testing procedures for advancing up in levels.
Our class teaches Shaolin Kungfu as way to strenthen your body,
improve your health, and enrich your life. Therefore, you do not need
to be "tested" or given a belt to prove your ability or rank.
We do however, encourage you to participate in competitions (there is
an annual Martial Arts competition held at UC Berkeley) and also
class performances as a way to focus your training and set goals
for yourself.

Please be mindful of your classmates and some rules during class:
